when is too many friends enough?
Bill Gates is reported to have joined the 19 million plus social site LinkedIn to "encourage young people to pursue careers in science and technology". Not sure of the connection myself, but I am not young. But apparently he is making maximum use of LinkedIn's "privacy" settings! He was previously a member of Facebook (which Microsoft currently has a 5% stake in) but had to resign when he had "a flood of requests from strangers who wanted to be his friend" Hey guess we've all been there right ;-) It seems to highlight that although we want to belong to a social circle, we need a hardcore of people whose names we can actually remember and actually know! Otherwise it's just like being on one side of the terrace at the football match isn't it? (Safety tip, be on you teams side of the terrace.) How do you control your social networking? Would you give your mother-in-law your private Facebook handle? Is your mother-in-law on linkedin? Has social networking caused anyone you know a love life break up? (I know of two such incidents centred around social network infidelity) These and other questions remain - unanswered... Peter.
