Warning for non USA Amazon Associates
A WARNING to non USA based Amazon Associates. Even Canadians. I found out today I've been losing money for months :-( It's obvious now I say it, but it didn't stop me LOSING MONEY! Bottom line Amazon use different affiliate schemes for each of their territories (countries). I am in the UK, so naturally I ended up with a UK affiliate ID. (Amazon name "affiliates" as "associates" instead for some reason.) If you use the Amazon Associates tools page to create your sales widgets, recommendation links, etc. everything is fine, as naturally it uses the affiliate ID code for where you are logged in to currently. And the pricing and landing pages match. But if you use any sort of automated script, like HyperVRE, Auction Cow, or a YouTube Clone, these are USA centric by default (or hard coded design) and need a USA affiliate code. The danger is that your (non USA) affiliate referral links will still work, but Amazon will never pay you, with a non USA affiliate code. THEY WILL NEVER PAY YOU! Anyone can still get a USA Associate ID, they can even pay out internationally, but YOU need to work this out for yourself! Unfortunately your affiliate ID is unique for each territory and Amazon do not work it out or aggregate them for you. I hope this will stop you losing money (commission), like I was! I thought I was just unlucky for months not getting a single commission, but of course, that may not have been the reason. Amazon still got all my referrals of course. Remember that 70% of Internet traffic is USA based, so you need to carefully consider if your traffic needs to be USA priced and USA landing page directed. NB this applies to CANADA too. They have their own Amazon territory too. Not sure how you call that one! Guess it depends how Canadian you are ;-) Would you go for local/national pride, or for the greater traffic? OR do you even use the French site and scheme as part of their cultural linguistics. The Internet is not so international sometimes... The EBAY affiliate scheme has similar issues, but Commission Junction who manage it seem to make it more obvious. But again be careful that any automated scripts (like Auction Cow) have the correct territory affiliate scheme ID set in it. If I have saved you money, please vote well on this article and please spread the word. I lost 4 months of commission because of this! I just thought I was incredibly unlucky ;-) Peter. |
